The Golden State

An Appeal to California

For decades your state has voted Democratic, not only for its values, but also for all the results it has achieved in your state, and nationwide. However, there are of course some valid concerns given the last few months. Here are a few specific issues that we want to target in California:

  • K-12 Education: As mentioned in our education policy, we want to reinvest in public schools. Currently, the schools in California do not live up to the standard that the children deserve. Therefore, we want to increase funding in public schools, and their schools after-school programs. With this, we hope to improve both student performances, and their experiences at school.

  • Environmental Disasters: Even at this moment, California is battling with all its might against the wild fires. Over the past few days, thousands of hectares of forest has been destroyed, and if we do not step in as a collective now, much more will be destroyed. Thus, we propose to work with several environmental groups, such as IUCN, to combat landscape degradation, and make the natural parks that we all adore safe again.

  • Water shortage: A problem that is of huge importance to California, but has not yet received much attention on the national stage is the terrible drought that has lasted for several years now. Day-to-day life has suffered quite a lot for many Californians, and we believe that this must be solved now. To tackle this problem we want to invest in recycling wastewater. So far, the legislature in California has already pushed for this idea, but with the federal government's help, much more could be achieved. Additionally, with success in California, this could lead to more projects like this throughout the country. An added benefit, is that these projects would lead to many new jobs as well.

  • Prison Overcrowding: The prisons nationally are completely full, and in California this is the case as well. A good solution to this would be to limit amount of prison sentences given to non-violent (drug) crimes. It has been estimated that a total of $1.29 billion of the government’s money could be saved if there were 20% fewer drug offenders sent to prison. This money could then be utilized for more important issues, such as public facilities (schools) and other government spending that would benefit everyone.

  • Health Care: As mentioned on our website, the health care system in the US is of great importance to our campaign. We believe that by implementing universal health care through a public system, the prices would decrease significantly, while covering everyone for much more.
